Newbury
BONFIRES are being built and excitement is mounting in and around Newbury, in anticipation of Guy Fawkes night.
Community gatherings in Newbury on Saturday night include a spectacular Fireworks Display at Newbury Racecourse, organised by The Lions Club of Newbury, with a fun fair, barbecue and bar. Gates open at 5.30pm and fireworks begin at 7.30pm.
Over at Chieveley recreation ground, plans for the 43rd annual bash are in hand, including guys, a firework show, food and bar, from 6.15pm to 8.30pm.
Alternatively, join the fireworks party and barbecue with the Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band from 7pm at the Arlington Arts Centre, Snelsmore Common. There will also be a bonfire and fireworks display and amusement rides at Falkland Cricket Club, Wash Common, from 6pm to 9pm.
In the wider, surrounding area, also on Saturday, the Friends of Kingsclere school have organised a firework display, bonfire and refreshments at the Fieldgate centre to raise funds for the school. The gates will open at 5.30pm and the display starts at 6.30pm.
The Baughurst Scout and guide group are hosting a fireworks display, bonfire and stalls, from 6.30pm, in Adams Field, Baughurst.
And the Silchester Association’s bonfire night will be held from 6pm, at Silchester House.
In Lambourn on Saturday, the Lambourn Festival Committee is presenting a community bonfire party from 6.30pm, with fireworks at 7pm and a barbecue at Lambourn Sports Club in Bockhampton Road.
A charity fireworks display and funfair will be held on next Saturday (November 12) at Henwick Farm, Turnpike Lane, Thatcham. The gates for this event will open at 5.30pm, with a quiet children’s display at 7pm and main display at 7.30pm.
Meanwhile, local emergency fire and ambulance services are reminding members of the public that fireworks should be marked with the British Standard BS 7114, pets should be kept indoors and bonfires built away from sheds, fences and trees and overhead cables and not lit with petrol or paraffin.
Hampshire Constabulary has also warned that anyone under the age of 18 caught possessing adult fireworks in a public place or throwing fireworks in the street could be issued with an £80 penalty notice, and that it is also an offence to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, apart from on November 5, Diwali, New Year's Eve and the Chinese New Year, when the curfew is extended to midnight. It is also illegal for shops to sell fireworks without an appropriate licence.
Airedale and Wharfedale
The skies above Wharfedale and Aireborough will be full of colour during the next few days as people head out to celebrate Bonfire Night.
Bonfires and firework displays are planned across the area starting tomorrow night in Addingham and Ilkley.
Addingham Cricket Club hosts its bonfire and will have two firework displays, starting at 6.30pm.
The bonfire has become a firm favourite in the social calendar of the club and aims to raise much needed-funds for its maintenance.
A family ticket (two adults and two children) costs £10, adult tickets cost £5, and children’s cost £2. Food will be on sale.
At Ilkley Tennis Club, off Stourton Road, a free bonfire and firework display starts at 6pm. Food will be on sale.
Saturday sees the return of the popular Pat’s Bonfire in Ben Rhydding.
The event takes its name from the late Pat Evans, from Ilkley, who organised parties to help children caught up in the Iraq war.
Since her death in 2005, her friends and family have continued to support Save the Children with an annual summer event and bonfire night celebrations and have raised more than £35,000 for the cause.
This year’s event, off Moorfield Road, starts at 5.30pm, with the bonfire being lit at 6.15pm, and fireworks from 6.30pm to 7pm.
It will also feature magician Paul Sunderland and band Fischers Ghost.
Tickets cost £6 for adults, £3 for youngsters aged 12 to 16 and entry is free for under-12s who must be accompanied by ticket-holders.
Tickets are available from La Stazione Cafe in Ilkley Station; Dale Eddison on The Grove in Ilkley and Steven Furniss the Butchers, in Ben Rhydding.
On the same night, the Friends of Ashlands Primary School will have a bonfire and fireworks display in the school grounds, in Leeds Road, Ilkley.
There will be a display for smaller children at 5.30pm before the main display at 6pm.
Otley Rugby Club is also preparing for its annual event at their ground on Saturday, with the fun starting at 6pm, and the whole of the clubhouse and bars open.
Tickets cost £20 for a Family Ticket for two adults and two children, with individual tickets available for £6 each, including food.
The tickets are available from the club or through George Rose-Fall and Sarah Savage. All proceeds will help fund the Under-13s Easter Tour to Italy.
Meanwhile, the Burley Bonfire will be in the grounds of the Burley Scout and Guide headquarters on Peel Place, Burley-in-Wharfedale.
Doors open at 6pm and local band Switchboard Spectacular will play from 6.30pm.
The bonfire will be lit at 7pm and the fireworks will begin at 7.30pm Entry is free, but buckets will be passed round for donations towards the cost of the fireworks. Bonfire food will be on sale.
There are also events at Guiseley Baptist Church from 6pm onwards, and Yeadon Cricket Club, with gates open from 6pm.
